AAC Block Making Machine: How Steam Curing Process Determines Finished Block Quality

October 30, 2026

Autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC) blocks are widely recognized lightweight building materials with excellent thermal insulation, fire resistance and sound insulation performance. While batching, mixing and cutting units of an AAC block making machine attract most attention from investors, the steam autoclave curing stage is the core procedure that finalizes the physical performance of AAC blocks. Many new AAC production lines encounter unstable product strength, easy cracking or inconsistent quality, which are not always caused by raw material proportion, but improper steam curing control matched with the AAC block making system.

The whole curing cycle inside the autoclave connected to the AAC block making machine includes four main phases: vacuum pumping, temperature rising, constant pressure holding and pressure cooling. Each stage has strict requirements for temperature, pressure and duration. In the vacuum stage, air inside the autoclave is drawn out to remove residual gas in the green blocks, so saturated steam can fully penetrate into every part of the billet. If vacuum treatment is insufficient, uneven hydration reaction will occur inside the block, leading to big difference in strength between the surface and inner part of finished AAC blocks.

During the heating-up phase, the temperature and pressure rise speed should be controlled according to the formula of raw materials and the size of green blocks produced by the AAC block making machine. Too fast heating will generate excessive internal thermal stress, which makes the green blocks crack or warp. Too slow heating reduces the daily output of the whole AAC line and raises fuel consumption. Professional AAC equipment suppliers will configure automatic pressure and temperature interlock control system for the autoclave, which can adjust the heating curve intelligently instead of manual rough operation.

The constant pressure holding period is the key period for the chemical reaction between silica and lime inside AAC blocks. Under stable saturated steam pressure, tobermorite crystals are continuously formed, which endows AAC blocks with stable compressive strength. Different raw material combinations need different holding time. For example, AAC blocks with fly ash as main raw material and sand-based AAC products have distinct curing parameter standards. A well-matched AAC block making machine set will provide adjustable parameter schemes for customers according to local raw material test reports.

The cooling and pressure release phase also cannot be ignored. Rapid pressure relief will cause sharp volume change of moisture inside blocks and produce micro cracks invisible to naked eyes. Those micro cracks will lower the frost resistance and durability of AAC blocks in later service. High-quality AAC production lines adopt slow decompression design to ensure finished blocks keep stable structural integrity after curing.

It is worth noting that the steam curing system is not an independent device. It must be coordinated with the cutting machine, trolley transport system and green block resting area of the whole AAC block making machine. The turnover efficiency of trolleys, the interval time between cutting and entering autoclave, and the stacking way of green blocks will all interfere with the final curing effect. When planning a new AAC project, customers should not only compare the specification of autoclaves, but also check whether the whole line process linkage design is reasonable.

For AAC plant operators, regular inspection and maintenance of the steam pipeline, sealing parts and pressure sensors of the curing system is necessary. Good maintenance keeps the curing environment stable, reduces defective rate and extends the service life of the whole AAC block making machine. Reasonable steam curing management helps AAC manufacturers produce high-standard aerated blocks that meet local building codes and gain better market competitiveness.
